Jetting Ahead: Why Sewer Jetters Are the MVP of Drain Cleaning

What Is a Sewer Jetter?

A sewer jetter, also known as a hydro jetter, is a high-pressure water system used to clean the inside of pipes. It works like a power washer for your plumbing. A long, flexible hose with specialized nozzles is inserted into the pipe. Once activated, the machine shoots water at incredibly high pressure — often up to 4,000 PSI — scouring the pipe walls and blasting away buildup, grease, sludge, and even small tree roots.

In short, a cable machine breaks through clogs.
A sewer jetter cleans the entire pipe.

Cable Machines vs. Sewer Jetters: What’s the Difference?

Both tools are used to clear blocked pipes, but they work in very different ways — and choosing the right one can make or break the job (literally).

Cable Machines

Cable machines are mechanical tools that rotate a metal cable with a cutting head at the end. They’re effective for:

  • Hair clogs
  • Soap scum
  • Paper and small debris
  • Solid obstructions like tree roots (with the right head)

They’re especially useful for blockages close to the drain or in small-diameter pipes. But they have limitations:

  • They only clear a path through the blockage
  • They don’t clean the pipe walls
  • Grease and sludge often remain, leading to recurring clogs

In our recent job, we ran the cable through the line — but it couldn’t get through the dense buildup. That’s because the clog wasn’t just a plug; it was years of sticky grease coating the inside of the pipe.

Sewer Jetters

Sewer jetters, on the other hand, send pressurized water through a nozzle that moves forward while simultaneously blasting the pipe in all directions. This allows them to:

  • Remove grease, sludge, and scale from the inside of pipes
  • Restore full pipe diameter and flow
  • Prevent future clogs by completely cleaning the line

They’re particularly effective in:

  • Kitchen drain lines
  • Commercial plumbing systems
  • Long pipe runs
  • Older pipes that have never been cleaned

In our bathtub job, once we used the jetter, the water pressure broke up and flushed away all the grease and sludge. The pipe was restored, the tub drained properly, and the homeowner didn’t have to worry about a repeat clog anytime soon.

Watch It In Action

We documented this job in a short YouTube video so you can see exactly what happened and how the sewer jetter saved the day.

In the clip, you’ll see how the cable machine struggled with the grease buildup — and how the sewer jetter used high-pressure water to clear the drain completely.

When Should You Use a Sewer Jetter?

Not every clogged drain needs a jetter. In fact, using one on delicate or damaged pipes can sometimes cause issues if not handled by a professional. But here are a few signs that jetting may be the right solution:

1. Grease Clogs

If your kitchen drain frequently clogs or smells bad, grease is likely the culprit. Jetting is the most effective way to remove grease buildup.

2. Recurring Clogs

If your drain works fine for a week or two and then slows again, it’s likely a sign that the clog wasn’t fully cleared the first time. A cable might have punched a hole, but sludge remains. A jetter solves that.

3. Foul Odors

Sewer gas or bad smells from your drains are often caused by biofilm and sludge in the pipes. Jetting can remove the residue and eliminate the odor.

4. Commercial or Restaurant Drains

If you own or operate a business with frequent kitchen use, jetting should be part of your regular maintenance. It keeps your plumbing clean and compliant with health codes.

Preventive Maintenance: Not Just for Emergencies

Jetting isn’t just for emergencies. It can be part of your routine plumbing maintenance, especially for homes with:

  • Older plumbing systems
  • Large families (more kitchen usage)
  • Garbage disposals
  • Frequent cooking with oils or fats

Having your pipes jetted annually can prevent major blockages and keep your drains flowing like new.

Jeron from Prime Flow Plumbing was incredibly thorough with the plumbing work he did on our new (to us) home in Yalecrest. He has been to our home a number of times to help us with a number of different plumbing issues. He definitely went above and beyond and even took the time to (thoroughly) explain to us how certain systems worked and what needed to be done to them regarding annual maintenance. Highly recommended!!
